Florence Chadwick is most known for swimming across the English Channel in a record-breaking time, not once but twice. She was the first woman to swim the England-France journey in both directions.
Two years after setting records for her swim across the English Channel, Chadwick attempted to swim 26 miles between Catalina Island and the California coastline. As with all her long distance swims, Chadwick had small boats follow her if she grew tired or became injured. After 15 hours into her swim a thick fog set in and Florence began to struggle; she requested to be pulled out of the water, unable to see the coastline due to the fog. Chadwick was only 1 mile away from finishing her swim.
A couple of months later Chadwick attempted the 26 mile swim once again, with the same thick fog that had set in last time. This time was different for Florence; she kept a mental image of her goal in mind. Chadwick completed the swim this time with no hesitation of whether she would be able to complete the swim.
